How Smyth Sewn Book Binding Works

The smyth sewn book binding method is perfect for projects with roughly 8 pages to 720 pages per item. Check out the high-level process that happens at BindTech.

  1. Loose signatures are gathered to form a collated book block
  2. The machine opens each signature and places is on the saddle
  3. Each signature is accounted for with a camera located on the machine
  4. This process eliminates mistakes and ensures accurate signature placement
  5. Signatures are then sewn together using a cotton covered nylon thread
  6. Each folded signature is sewn to the next with multiple needle and thread stitches down the length of the signature
  7. The final result is a durable smyth sewn book block

You’d typically choose Smyth sewn book binding when…

Durability is a priority

  • Books will be handled a lot (e.g., cookbooks, children’s books, academic texts).

  • You need the binding to last decades without pages falling out.

A premium feel is important

  • High-end publications like art books, photography books, coffee table books, or luxury editions.

  • When you want the binding to signal quality and craftsmanship.

Functionality matters

  • Books that need to lay flat for practical use (manuals, music books, cookbooks, sketchbooks).

  • Large or heavy books where binding with glue might crack or give out.

Higher page count

  • Great for books with more than about 80 pages (thinner books might be better suited to saddle-stitch or perfect binding).

  • Especially suited for thick volumes (hundreds of pages), since it keeps them strong and usable.
